Just like a business or home, every web site on the Internet must have its own "address". A DOMAIN NAME is the distinctive address used. The Domain Name is used for the actual web site address, such as www.yourcompany.com.au, and for your email address, such as sales@yourcompany.com.au. Each Domain Name must be registered with the appropriate registry. Domain Names comprise sets of labels, each of which tells something about the site. The labels become more specific from right to left and each label is separated by a full stop. Typically, from right to left, you will find:
a two letter country code, for example au for Australian sites (except for some domain names from the US which have no country code);
a three letter label indicating the type of site, for example .net (for networks providing Internet access), .com (for commercial), .gov for government departments, .org for organisations, charities or clubs and the new .biz and .info, and;
a label identifying the individual site, for example, yourcompany.
Once a Domain Name is registered, it then has to be "delegated" to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or web hosting company. Delegation is a technical procedure that results in the ISP or web hosting company becoming the technical administrator of your domain name. This means that your Domain Name is connected to the World Wide Web, similar to connecting a new telephone service. So Delegation is the connection of your new Domain Name to the server where your web-site will be located and accessed by the World.
